Statement
I collect found amateur, anonymous snapshots and old travel postcards. The images in my paintings are inspired by and appropriated from these sources. I am working on two bodies of work simultaneously. One is called Almost Utopia and is inspired by the current obsession for mid-century furniture, design and architecture. Utilitarian objects, machines, government buildings and banal environments that were designed to promote a vision of the future are my subjects. I chose to paint images that blur the line between past and present; exteriors and interiors that haven't changed or been updated and are still in use today. The other series of paintings is called The Other Hallmark. These paintings show individuals, families and holiday celebrations not typically represented on greeting cards. Most are humorous, but some have a darker emotional tone evident in the scenes depicting isolation and disappointment.
